Shelter Workers Shocked By What Was Found Under A Green Tarp In Parking Lot

After a night of severe storms in San Antonio, staff at SA Animal Care Services arrived early to work and discovered an unusual sight—a drenched green tarp lying in their parking lot. Concerned, they went to investigate. When they lifted the tarp, they were met with a heartbreaking scene.

Beneath the wet covering, six eyes stared back at them—filled with fear and confusion. – Continue Below

Two German Shepherds and a Chihuahua had been abandoned, left in cages under the tarp in the middle of the storm. The dogs, soaked and terrified, had no idea why the people they likely trusted had left them in such harsh conditions.

Lisa Norwood, public relations manager for San Antonio Animal Care Services, shared with The Dodo, “It’s always disheartening when something like this happens. We had been experiencing strong thunderstorms, and I can only imagine how scared they must have been with the rain, thunder, and traffic all around.” – Continue Below

The shelter staff quickly sprang into action, calling for assistance to transport the frightened dogs to safety. Once inside the shelter, the three pups were given warmth, food, and water.

The two German Shepherds were named Peaches and Cyrus, while the little Chihuahua was given the name Gabby. – Continue Below

The Journey to Recovery and Adoption According to Norwood, “Peaches and Gabby were a bit more calm and easier to manage. Cyrus, however, was understandably more shaken and needed some time to adjust.”

Cyrus had been deeply affected by the traumatic experience and required more time and care to begin trusting again.

The issue of stray and abandoned animals in San Antonio has been a growing problem, with shelters overwhelmed by the number of animals in need. On social media, the shelter shared, “Innocent dogs abandoned under a tarp in the storm… pets wandering the streets, causing distress in neighborhoods… kennels overflowing with unwanted animals… This is the reality our shelter faces daily.”

Faced with limited space and resources, the shelter knew they couldn’t keep the dogs indefinitely.

Fortunately, Peaches and Gabby were adopted soon after arriving at the shelter. Cyrus, still needing time to heal from his ordeal, was transferred to German Shepherd Rescue of NY, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to saving German Shepherds from euthanasia.

The good news didn’t stop there. According to GSRNY’s Facebook page, Cyrus also found his forever home not long after being transferred.

It’s heartwarming to know that all three dogs were given a second chance at life. We hope they will never have to experience abandonment again and can now enjoy the love and security they deserve.
