Unfortunately, it’s not surprising to encounter abandoned dogs or puppies on the streets lately. Rescuers, dog lovers, and animal control officers have long been accustomed to this heartbreaking reality. However, a recent case in New Bern, North Carolina, highlights that surprises are still possible—especially when a note is found next to an abandoned puppy.

When a kind man found a puppy in a cage near the Books-A-Million parking lot in New Bern, he immediately called New Bern Animal Control. Officers quickly responded, but the scene they encountered left them speechless. “To leave an animal like that on the side of the road, especially in the summer heat…there was no water in the cage, just a bag of food. CONTINUE BELOW

It’s not the right thing to do,” said New Bern Animal Control Officer Kevin Bahr in an interview with WITN. What truly shocked the officers was the note found in the cage with the twelve-week-old puppy.

It read: “Please take me… I’m a 12-week hound. I don’t bite. Take great care of him. He has food with him.” While it might seem the owner had good intentions, the officers struggled to understand how someone could abandon their puppy like that. CONTINUE BELOW

Fortunately, the puppy found a solution quickly. He was transferred to Craven-Pamlico Animal Services, where he will stay until he finds his forever home. Following this, animal control officers announced on their official Facebook page that abandoning an animal is illegal and can result in fines of up to $1,000.

Social media users reacted with outrage, expressing disbelief and concern for the puppy’s well-being. CONTINUE BELOW

Thanks to compassionate individuals, this puppy is now safe and waiting for better days and a loving family. Officers used this situation to warn other pet owners who might consider similar actions: “While we understand that everyone’s circumstances are different, leaving a dog in a location where anyone could take him shows a lack of concern for his well-being. There is no excuse or tolerance for this behavior in Craven County.”
