On Long Island, New York, not far east of Brooklyn and Queens, a disturbing trend has emerged: criminals are installing illicit vending machines that threaten to undermine local communities. These machines, originally designed to sell tampons, have been refurbished to distribute crack pipes in public spaces. Police have confirmed that these machines provide easy access to drug paraphernalia, posing risks to everyone from drug users to curious children.
Fortunately, authorities have removed three of these crack pipe vending machines from Long Island, safeguarding residents from the dangers associated with such easy access to illicit items. Suffolk County has a long history of drug abuse, and the local police department is actively working to address drug-related issues. However, their efforts often feel like a game of whack-a-mole, with criminals constantly finding new ways to exploit the situation. The emergence of these refurbished vending machines is just one example of this ongoing struggle. CONTINUE FOR VIDEO BELOW
These machines, which misleadingly advertise “Sketch Pens,” have sparked outrage among the public. The criminals behind this scheme are charging two dollars per ceramic tube designed for smoking drugs. Police are currently investigating the source of these vending machines. It’s unclear whether they were installed by drug dealers or by an unscrupulous entrepreneur looking to exploit a gap in the market by placing them on street corners without proper permits.
The vending machines dispense a ceramic “pen” equipped with a filter, making it easy for users to smoke the dangerous and addictive drug. The Suffolk County Police Department is determined to uncover who is behind this alarming trend. They are actively investigating the installation of these machines in public restrooms. “At first, we thought, ‘Could this be a joke?’ But upon closer inspection, we realized it was far too elaborate to be a prank,” said Michael Loguercio, a councilman for Brookhaven Town District 4, in an interview with The New York Post. Residents are frustrated and are calling for action to eliminate this blight on their community. CONTINUE FOR VIDEO BELOW
Suffolk County has suffered 337 heroin-related deaths from 2009 to 2013, marking the highest overdose death rate in New York State during that period. One resident, Anthony Minichini, expressed his disbelief upon discovering a crack pipe vending machine near a bus stop. “Wow! You learn something new every day. A crack pipe vending machine on the side of the road next to bus stops in Suffolk County. Really?”
Local officials share his concerns. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine remarked, “Those selling crack obviously encountered issues with users needing crack pipes, and they thought this would be a clever solution.” Currently, the median home price in Suffolk County is $376,700, more than double the median price for existing homes across the United States. While it may be easy for drug users to obtain these “sketch pens” in Long Island, the implications for the community are serious and require urgent attention. WATCH VIDEO BELOW
