A shelter dog named Sally was saved on the day she was supposed to be euthanized and now her way of showing her new mom gratitude is melting hearts all over social media. In a viral video shared onĀ TikTokĀ on Wednesday, under the username @c15980, the pit bull can be seen snuggling up to her owner on the bed, giving her lots of hugs and kisses, as if she really understood what she had just been saved from.

“I brought a senior dog home from the shelter the day she was supposed to be euthanized. This is how she thanked me,” a caption said, “Sally is the world’s biggest cuddle bug.”

According to Rescue Dog Home, pit bulls end up in shelters more than any other breed, and they are euthanized in the greatest numbers as well. One in 600 pit bulls in shelters will find a forever home, according to the website. Moreover, around 33 percent of dogs arriving in shelters are pit bulls, and at least 75 percent of municipal shelters euthanize pit bulls immediately upon intake.

Each year 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet ‘Shelter Watch Report’ found. Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

TheĀ videoĀ quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 185,400 views and 44,700 likes on the platform.

One user, Sarah Madeline, commented: “Mama I’ve been waiting my whole life for you.”

Artemis_Greenleaf said: “Thank you for saving her! The euthanasia rates at shelters are so high, it’s ridiculous. The shelter I volunteer at put over 12 dogs down in one month recently.”

Anonanomal added: “My family saved a senior dog when I was younger, she was 16 when we found her.. we had her for 7 or 8 more years after that. I hope she was happy with us.”
