When Jaina and Ivy Spagis pulled into a coffee drive-thru in San Bernardino, California, they had no idea they were about to change the life of a lost dog in need.
As the couple waited in line, a large gray and white dog suddenly appeared in front of their car, looking scared and confused. The pup, with her tail tucked between her legs, ran through the drive-thru as if searching for something—or someone. – Continue Below
Upon closer inspection, they noticed something unusual hanging around the dog’s neck—a pair of pants tied like a makeshift collar. As the founders of Cats of San Bernardino, a local animal rescue, Jaina and Ivy had plenty of experience with rescues. They knew they had to help this dog.
The dog, later named Bette Davis, seemed to be frantically searching the parking lot, perhaps hoping to find her family. As the Spagis couple approached her slowly, they noticed the sadness and fear in her eyes. Bette appeared torn—she wanted to trust them but was too afraid to let them get too close. The couple spoke softly to her as they cautiously moved closer. Eventually, their patience paid off. Bette allowed them to approach, and when Jaina knelt down to pet her, Bette licked her hands, showing signs of trust. – Continue Below
Once she felt safe, Bette rolled onto her back, inviting them to give her belly rubs. It was clear this sweet dog was in desperate need of affection and comfort, which the rescuers were more than happy to provide. After making sure Bette was calm, they led her to a safe spot and treated her to a cup of whipped cream. While she enjoyed her Puppuccino, they carefully untied the sweatshirt that had been looped around her neck. When Bette finished her treat, she willingly jumped into their car, and they drove her to a vet to have her checked for a microchip. To their relief, Bette had one, and they hoped this meant a quick reunion with her family.
Unfortunately, when they contacted her previous owner, they learned the heartbreaking truth. The owner had moved away and left Bette behind, showing no interest in taking her back. “We were able to reach the owner, but he said he couldn’t take her and didn’t want her back,” the rescue group later shared on social media. – Continue Below
Though saddened by the owner’s response, Jaina and Ivy promised Bette that they would find her the loving home she deserved. Since their rescue primarily focuses on cats, they couldn’t take Bette in right away. However, they quickly found her a foster family where she could stay temporarily. – Continue Below
After a week of being cared for by her foster family, Bette was finally reunited with her original rescuers. She was thrilled to see them again, her tail wagging with happiness. Though she’s still waiting for her forever home, she’s safe and surrounded by love.
Bette has received numerous adoption applications, and it’s only a matter of time before she finds the perfect family who will love and care for her unconditionally. This beautiful dog deserves nothing less than a life filled with love and security.
