Hurricane Milton Getting Near: Tornadoes Spotted in Several Areas

Tornadoes have been confirmed in several areas, including the Everglades, Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation, and near major highways. Residents of South Florida should remain vigilant as additional tornadoes may occur. At 10:08 a.m., the National Weather Service (NWS) Miami-South Florida tweeted, “TORNADO crossing I-75 right now! Seek shelter IMMEDIATELY!”

A subsequent post warned of a tornado spotted over the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation, urging people in the area to find shelter. The NWS also shared images depicting the tornado’s lifecycle. By 10:21 a.m., another report indicated a sighting west-northwest of the Miccosukee Service Plaza. CONTINUE BELOW

Local residents responded with their own photos and videos. “Just took this outside Weston,” one person posted at 10:26 a.m. Another added, “From my window in Weston…”

Other news outlets shared footage of the tornadoes as well. One video from WPLG Local 10’s YouTube channel shows a tornado moving through west Pembroke Pines. Another clip captures a tornado in the Everglades near Alligator Alley, with dark clouds swirling ominously overhead. A striking video from Southwest Ranches also shows a tornado caught on cellphone footage. CONTINUE BELOW

At 10:56 a.m., the NWS issued a reminder, stating that multiple tornadoes had been confirmed and that three active warnings were in effect. They cautioned that “additional tornadoes remain possible” as Hurricane Milton approaches landfall.

By 11:46 a.m., the NWS provided another urgent update: “Reports of another meso-vortex tornado occurring on the western side of Lake Okeechobee near Lakeport. There are currently four active tornado warnings—Naples Metro, Pahokee/Canal Point, Lakeport, and Ortona. SEEK SHELTER NOW!” CONTINUE BELOW
