Fostering a puppy is a remarkable act of kindness. Opening one’s home to stray or abandoned dogs and helping them recover from their emotional turmoil is truly heroic. Many of these dogs desperately need a fresh start, and until they can find their forever homes, foster parents are there every step of the way to ensure they heal.

In this story, we explore a dog who has endured so much but also brought an unexpected surprise along the way. When Kaitlin Devoto first agreed to foster a dog, she was completely new to the experience. She admitted to The Dodo, “I didn’t know the gender or age. The first time we knew what she looked like was when she arrived in Cincinnati, and I picked her up.” CONTINUE BELOW

At the pickup center in New York, she spotted a beautiful red poodle. Kaitlin noticed that the dog might have been producing milk but assumed it was likely due to a recent litter. “It’s not unusual to receive a puppy mill mom who’s still lactating. When their puppies are weaned, moms are considered ‘no longer useful,’” she explained.

Four days later, Kaitlin woke up to something unexpected. She approached the dog and was shocked to find a small puppy in the dog bed. The mother had given birth overnight, and Kaitlin hadn’t even realized it was happening. CONTINUE BELOW

Knowing she needed to act quickly, Kaitlin made sure both mother and puppy were comfortable, arranging soft blankets around them. The new puppy was a male and resembled a chicken nugget, leading to his name: Chicky Nug. “He was very quickly named Chicky Nug. I just needed a name for Mom that fit the same theme.”

As time passed, the newborn puppy grew rapidly, becoming quite playful. “He loves to run around and do zoomies, and he’s very interested in biting toes and toys,” Kaitlin said. Meanwhile, Mickey, the mother, began to shed her shyness, becoming more outgoing and enjoying her new toys. Soon, they will go through the standard adoption process with the help of Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue in New York. While it’s unclear if they’ve found their new families yet, it’s hard to believe that anyone wouldn’t want to adopt such lovable dogs. CONTINUE BELOW
